A local hotspot and chic watering hole in the popular Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston, Alibi Bar & Lounge is a favorite of natives and tourists alike. What was once the old Charles Street Jail was transformed into the posh Liberty Hotel, where the Alibi now resides (in what was once the jail's "drunk tank"). This upscale urban eatery has a modern design with a good-humored, creative "jail lockup" theme, highlighted by the brick cell walls and bluestone floors left from the original architecture.
Before our makeover, the Alibi's expansive patio area, with its luxe contemporary design, was marred by a perimeter of dying and scraggly looking plants. Not only did these unfortunate plants look untidy and tired, but without proper patio dividers, the outdoor lounge faced an increasing problem with noise pollution and lack of privacy from the street.
Alibi's General Manager, Andrew Zimmer, approached Artificial Plants Unlimited for advice and support with this issue. For this project, we had to address the lack of privacy, and also wanted to keep with a modern garden design. The solution was to use custom sized faux boxwood hedges planted in our oversized Modern planters. We built several tall hedges and placed them along the perimeter of the patio. The result was a private, noise tamping patio lounge with a fresh and lush garden feel.

Not only would the plush new hedges match the modern design theme, but their exterior rating and UV protection would make them ideal for an outdoor environment in the sometimes-inclement Boston weather, ensuring that they would remain fresh and green for years to come. The fiberglass planters housing the hedges are also commercial-grade and damage-resistant; the perfect fit for a high-traffic environment! And since these hedges are artificial, that means no more maintenance costs spent on watering, trimming, and fertilizing!
Along with their durable design, these faux boxwood hedges double as space dividers and privacy screens, creating an intimate area for diners to relax without having to see the traffic and hear the noise from the nearby street. This means more time lounging, and more money spent on drinks and apps!
To add to the ambiance of outdoor lounging and entertaining, Madi from the Artificial Plants Unlimited team suggested that we further customize the hedges with lights, as well as cutouts where bespoke shelving could be placed to hold menus, event bulletins, photos, and other items for patrons to study and enjoy while eating.
